Craig Legislation Recommended by State Property Tax Working Group
Today, state Senator Hearcel F. Craig (D-Columbus) announced that two of his bills, Senate Bill 22 and Senate Bill 42, have been formally recommended by Governor DeWine’s Property Tax Working Group to address the state’s property tax crisis.
“Our state is facing a housing crisis that is exacerbated by rising property taxes,” said Craig. “It is critical that we pass these pieces of legislation to protect families and ensure a better future for our younger generations. I hope the Property Tax Working Group’s recommendation of these proposals provides the endorsement needed to secure their passage by the legislature.”
Senate Bill 22, introduced with state Senator Louis W. Blessing III (R-Colerain Township), would authorize a property tax “Circuit Breaker” for eligible homeowners and renters whose property tax exceeds 5% of their income. The tax circuit breaker is capped at $1,000 per year and can either be claimed as a refundable income tax credit or a direct rebate for individuals who do not file state income tax returns.
Senate Bill 42, introduced with state Senator Michele Reynolds (R-Canal Winchester), would establish residential stability zones where governments can provide property tax exemptions to ensure that long-term residents can remain in their homes.
Senate Bill 22 awaits a first hearing in the Senate Finance Committee, while Senate Bill 42 has received one hearing in the Senate Local Government Committee.
