Senate President Rob McColley Honors Buckeye Football Champs

COLUMBUS—President Rob McColley (R-Napoleon) recognized the unprecedented accomplishments of the 2024 National Championship Ohio State football team with a presentation in the Ohio Senate today. They were the first team to win a championship in a 12-team playoff format, and did it with a dominance never seen before in college football. The Buckeyes defeated six of the top eight teams in the country, including four in the playoffs: Tennessee, Oregon, Texas, and Notre Dame.
"This team set an example for every young person in Ohio not just with their accomplishments on the field, but in the way they overcame adversity and heartbreak, persevering without stopping until they reached their goals," said McColley. "Their triumph is about so much more than their athletic skill. It is about character, commitment, and the deep faith that became the hallmark of this team."

"It means a great deal for us to represent the great State of Ohio on the national stage and to bring a national championship home to the state that values hard work, resilience, and excellence," said Coach Ryan Day. "We're proud to represent the State of Ohio in everything that we do. We understand the privilege and honor that come with wearing the Block O on our chests, and we take our responsibilities very seriously."
"We also understand how important it is to Ohio to be winners. So, winning on and off the field matters to our program," the coach concluded.

Coach Day also talked about how proud he was that the Buckeyes are the only Division I football program to post a perfect 1,000 APR Score, which is the academic eligibility standard in the NCAA.
This was Ohio State's ninth national championship in football. The Buckeyes won the championship in 1942, 1954, 1957, 1961, 1968, 1970, 2002, 2014 and now 2024.
The Buckeyes rank sixth in the total number of national championships, but to get an idea of how long they have been keeping records, the top team in that category is Yale, with 18 rings. However, Yale has not won the championship since 1927. Most of its championships came in the 1800's.
