Senator Sykes is currently serving his second term in the Ohio Senate, where he represents the city of Akron and multiple neighboring cities.
A longtime advocate of redistricting reform, Senator Sykes was instrumental in passing legislation to reform the way Ohio's congressional and state legislative districts are drawn.
Senator Sykes is Professor Emeritus of Political Science at Kent State University.
